All Natural Hand Sanitizer Recipe - With Free PrintableI love getting dirty outside with my boys & even encourage them to play in the mud! I believe there’s beneficial microbes in dirt that actually work to help keep us healthy. The germs I like to kill are the virus’ & bacterias found in public places like public bathrooms, amusement parks, the gym, and grocery carts.

What’s even scarier to me than those germs, is the chemical ingredients found in commercial Hand Sanitizers that leave our hands dry and fingers peeling. But, Good news! It’s ridiculously easy to make your own Homemade All Natural Hand Sanitizer that actually Kills Germs & Moisturizes your hands without all those harsh ingredients. Even better, you can whip up this recipe in 5 seconds in your Vitamix or Immersion Blender!

Hand sanitizers should never take the place of a good ol’ fashioned hand washing. But, when that’s not possible, sanitizing pumps  & sprays can come in handy… especially with children! When we’re on the go, I like to use a combination of wet-wipes & hand sanitizer to really attack those germs effectively.

If you want to print out a pretty label like mine… I’ve got FREE Printable for you Over Here! Feel free to use it on your own bottle!

Description

You can make this All Natural Hand Sanitizer Recipe in less than 5 minutes.  Plus it smells amazing & won’t dry out your hands.  Can be made into a convenient Pump or Spray.

Ingredients

Scale

BASE INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 Cup Aloe Vera Juice (for spray recipe) or Aloe Vera Gel (for pump recipe) – Note: This is the All Natural Aloe products from a plant, not the ‘after sun’ stuff you find in the store
  • 1/4 Cup Vodka, Witch Hazel or Rubbing Alcohol (the 70% or 90% kind).
  • 10–20 drops of Anti-Bacterial Essential Oils:  Tea Tree, Clove, Thyme, Cinnamon, Orange, Lavender, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Peppermint, etc..) Mix and Match, but be careful of any phototoxic oils that can burn your skin if exposed to sunshine.

OPTIONAL MOISTURIZING INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Tablespoon (4–6 Squirts) of your Favorite All Natural Lotion (I use an Organic Lavender Lotion)
  • 1 Tablespoon Vegetable Glycerin (helps keeps your hands soft & moisturized)

Instructions

  • Pour all of the ingredients into your Vitamix or use your Immersion Blender to blend all ingredients well.
  • Once the mixture is well blended, pour into your desired airtight container. I love these Spray Bottles & these Squeeze Bottles.
  • Store in a cool location out of direct sunlight.

Notes

  • To use the Hand Sanitizer, Pump or Spray enough on hands to get them wet and rub vigorously together. Let air dry & repeat if necessary.
  • For maximum effectiveness in cases where hands are visibly dirty, wash/rinse first (or use a wet wipe if you have one), then apply the Sanitizer.

Thanks for the recipe! I’m confused as to how the yield is less than the amount put in – is it because the alcohol causes some of the liquid to evaporate…? Also curious how long this stays good – looking to use it at work, where we go thru a lot of hand sanitizer but can’t stand using the chemical stuff (which pretty much leaves us to the EO brand hand sanitizer, which is great, but I’m looking for a more affordable option). So depending on how long it lasts, it may or may not be cost effective for us to do this.
    Thanks!

Thanks for picking up on that Katie… I just changed the yield. I had a batch on my kitchen counter for a few months – but it was stored in an airtight pump. Hopefully you’ll find this to be a cost effective solution that doesn’t leave your hands so dry. God Bless! ~Erika

I’m wondering why you are requiring the “all natural aloe” and not the too much sun kind? Is there a difference and if so, what is it? Also, wondering what purpose the aloe serves? Is it supposed to moisturize, help with binding, sterilize, ect…?

This recipe will NOT work! You have to have an end product that contains at least 60% alcohol to work as an effective hand sanitizer. Vodka, at best, only contains 40% alcohol. Hitch hazel is an antiseptic, not a disinfectant.
This recipe will not be effective at killing germs at all. You need a 2:1 ratio of 91% alcohol to aloe gel. Author, you should take this down or do more research into proper amounts as this article is misleading people into making something that will not kill germs.

Thank you Anna. A nice hand rinse, but in this current environment, important to know the facts and not mislead people into thinking they will be protected.

Oh stfu you naysayers! First of all, if you’re talking crap because of Covid-19, commercial hand sanitizers aren’t doing shit either, they’re just making you “feel” like you’re safer. *insert eye roll*

It’s a virus and hand sanitizers don’t kill viruses. Second of all, commercial hand sanitizers (as well as all those antibacterial soaps) are destroying your body’s natural ability to fight off microbes by killing off the GOOD bacteria that help fight germs. Third, they are saying to use hand sanitizers WHEN SOAP AND WATER ARE NOT AVAILABLE for you to wash your hands.

So in essence, this recipe is probably doing just as well OTC hand sanitizers without killing off your microbiome.

Dangerous. There are simple recipes that work. This one isn’t close to 60% alcohol.

no you need to be careful about these directions as mixing too high a quantity of aloe to alcohol is diluting the alcohol percentage and it must be at least 60%. If you start with 70% isopropyl alcohol and add more than 10% volume of gel you are diluting it too far and it will not be effective. and you need to specify that the vodka which is not as ideal, must be 180 proof or it will be too low a volume of alcohol. 90 proof is only 45% alcohol and below the threshold of being effective.

If you read carefully this is an older recipe and never claimed to combat Covid-19 it’s an all natural waterless moisturizing hand wash great for when you can’t wash! Real Soap & water will always be your best line of defense this and any other hand sanitizers or washes aren’t 💯 to fight against super bugs

Totally DANGEROUS recipe. This should be immediately taken down.
    VODKA!!! Not enough alcohol strength.
Entire solution should be minimum 60% alcohol for it to be effective.
You CAN’T say to use either 70% alcohol or 99% alcohol with the same amount of aloe vera gel!
Those 2 different alcohol concentrations require different amount of all the other ingredients.
    Very BAD!

Dear author, I sincerely think you’ve done an awesome job at making your post available for all theses personas to let off some steam. I don’t see ur post as just being all about the mixture, but rather an awesome avenue for some people to let off some toxins from their withins.

I really think your post is awesome. Thanks for sharing, God bless you.

Vodka? That will make a 100% useless product. Research your BS before you give people the wrong information. People should rely on real science, not media.

This is a good post, But then this seems to be harmful if not prepared carefully without taking proper precautions. I’d recommend some other recipes whcih can be prepared easyily and cause no harm. Thankyou for this information.

Hand sanitizer most definitely does kill viruses, but this Is not hand sanitizer. Formulation matters. If this post was made in 2015, 2005, or 1995, it makes no difference. She’s claiming this kills germs and it doesn’t. It’s very bad advice and it needs to be taken down. It’s misinformation and potentially very harmful. Someone who is “educating” online really should know what they’re talking about. You wouldn’t take a chemistry class from someone who didn’t know anything about chemistry, so let’s stop listening to any old random person on the internet, and go to REPUTABLE SOURCES (something she should have done).

One more thing. “Natural” does NOT equal better. Anyone who says this or promotes it as always a better choice is woefully ignorant. Ricin, arsenic, and cyanide are all, yup “natural”. Shall we have some on toast?

Thank you for putting out this recipe. I thought I could use aloe vera juice, which I have, to make a spray. But wasn’t sure until I looked over your recipe and I do have 99% alcohol, and essential oil’s. So my finished product will be high enough in alcohol content and It won’t completely tear up our hands. I know to keep the alcohol content high for the Covid virus. But just needed a starter recipe. Thank you
